Some Christians are prone to look on the dark side of
everything and to dwell more on what they have gone through than on what God
has done for them. When you ask them their opinions of living the Christian life,
they will describe their continual conflicts, their deep afflictions, their sad
adversities and the sinfulness of their hearts without any form of allusion to the
mercies and help that God has granted them. A Christian whose soul is in a
healthy state will come forward joyously and say “I will speak not about myself
but to the honor of my God. He has brought me up out of a horrible pit, out of
the miry clay and set my feet upon the rock. He has established my going out
and coming in, has done great things for me and put a new song in my mouth”
It is true that we endure trials, it is also
true we are delivered out of them by God. The deeper our troubles, the louder
our thanks to God who has led us through and preserved us. Our grief cannot mar
the melody of our praise; we reckon them to be the bass part of our life’s song
“He has done great things for us, whereof we are glad” Psalm 126:3. The time
when Christians begin to sing in the ways of the lord is when they first lose
their burden at the foot of the cross Psalm 138:5.
Look back through all your experiences and
think of the ways the lord had led you in the wilderness, how he had fed and clothed
you every day, how he had put up with your murmurings and how had opened the
rock to supply all your needs. Think of how his grace had been sufficient for
you in all your troubles, how his blood had been a pardon to you in all your sins
and how his rod and staff have comforted you. Then you would know how faithful your God has been to you even in your unfaithfulness!
When you have
looked back upon the love of the lord; let your Faith survey his love in the
future. For remember that Christ’s covenant and blood have something more in
the future than in the past. He who has loved you and pardoned you shall never
cease to love and pardon. He is the Alpha and also the Omega, he is the first
and also the last! Therefore when you pass through the valley of the shadow of
death, you need not fear any evil for the lord is with you. He has never
refused to bear your burdens and has never fainted under their weight 1st
Peter 5:7.
Not even death has
the power to separate us from the love of God Romans 8:35-39. Surely as we meditate
on the love of the lord, let our hearts always long to love him more.
‘Come now, don’t be afraid. Leave all your concerns in the
hands of a gracious Father’.
Tonight is the second New Moon Service of the year. Let us
endeavor to give absolute reference to him who has preserved us to see another month. Remember, Jesus is the king in this celestial
church that will overcome the world.
